Richtext: Guest Educator Series What is Cryptocurrency? by Xavier Codie Cryptocurrency is a type of asset found on a decentralized ledger called a blockchain. A blockchain is like a public record book secured with cryptography to prevent data from being changed. Blockchains are run by a network of computers working together to verify and document new transactions. Cryptocurrencies are represented by coins or tokens, depending on their use case. Coins are used similar to how “fiat” money is used (i.e. US dollars, Euros, etc), as a currency of exchange and store of value. Tokens can represent currency as well as ownership of a network, contracts, digital assets, and much more. NFT stands for Non-Fungible Token, but in layman's terms, it is an official digital document of a unique asset. This asset can be an art piece, ticket, contract, and much more. Many people compare NFTs to fine art pieces and trading cards as art collections have been the most popular use case by far. The value of a NFT is ultimately determined by the individual, but factors like popularity, community, uniqueness, access, status, and utility can affect how a NFT’s value is determined. What’s the difference between buying the NFT and right-clicking the image? Its the difference between buying a copy of the Mona Lisa from Target and owning the original from Leonardo da Vinci. NFTs are not like cryptocurrencies or stocks, where they can be sold to a market maker at any time. Instead, an individual has to buy the NFT directly from you or through a secondary marketplace like OpenSea. Fake NFTs exist, so it is important to double check who you are buying from when shopping for NFTs.
